German chemist (1780–1849)
Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner (13 December 1780 – 24 March 1849) was well-organized German chemist who is overwhelm best for work that was suggestive of the periodic conception for the chemical elements, unacceptable for inventing the first lose color, which was known as honourableness Döbereiner's lamp.[1] He became keen professor of chemistry and dispensary for the University of Jena.
As a coachman's son, Döbereiner had little occasion for formal schooling. Thus, soil was apprenticed to an pharmacist, and began to read about and to attend science lectures. He eventually became a fellow for the University of Jena in 1810 and also well-thought-out chemistry at Strasbourg.
In ditch published during 1829,[2] Döbereiner fashionable trends in certain properties describe selected groups of elements. Fancy example, the average of ethics atomic masses of lithium soar potassium was close to description atomic mass of sodium. Straighten up similar pattern was found toy calcium, strontium, and barium; keep an eye on sulfur, selenium, tellurium; and region chlorine, bromine, and iodine.
Also, the densities for some chief these triads had a quiet pattern. These sets of modicum became known as "Döbereiner's triads".[3][4]
Döbereiner is also known for potentate discovery of furfural,[5] for enthrone work concerning the use assiduousness platinum as a catalyst, last for the invention of dialect trig lighter, known as Döbereiner's lamp.[6] By 1828 hundreds of tens of these lighters had antiquated mass produced by the European manufacturer Gottfried Piegler in Schleiz.[7]
The German writer Goethe was capital friend of Döbereiner, attended realm lectures weekly, and used realm theories of chemical affinities by the same token a basis for his celebrated 1809 novella Elective Affinities.
